Frequently Asked Questions

Prepperbot is a combination of multiple open-source AI models whose knowledge base is fed with a ton of data relevant to preppers- cooking recipes, survival manuals, declassified US military manuals, etc. Unlike AI applications like ChatGPT, this runs 100% locally on your computer. No internet connection is required to use it, and no data fingerprint is left behind.

Even people who aren't tech savvy at all can use this application. If you can send a text message, you can use Prepperbot! You simply type in a question and hit send, and it references its knowledge base to answer your questions to the best of its ability.

On the very first boot up, Prepperbot needs to have an internet connection. This connection only does two things: 1. Downloads the open source AI models to your local machine and 2. Verifies your software license to make sure you've purchased it. After that, it can be used offline indefinitely.

No, it is given a specific set of information relevant to preppers and survivalists. It cannot teach you how to play backgammon, but it can help you build a survival shelter.

The beauty of an offline application is that no external actors can possibly know what you ask Prepperbot. It does not save any information about you or your chats with it (other than the fact that your software license is valid). Once you close the application, the questions you asked are gone forever. Even if your computer was raided after you asked something, nobody would have a way of finding out what you asked it as long as you closed the application when you were done.

I made this because I am a prepper myself, and I am fascinated with the ability of technology to enhance our chances of off-grid survival when SHTF. I prepare for scenarios when the entire grid is down. One of those preps is my library of physical books on various survival topics. I knew an AI chatbot filled with that kind of information would make getting the info I need during an emergency much easier.

Honestly, I made this for myself, but I thought it would be a good thing to share with the world.

It depends on your hardware. Chatbots like ChatGPT run on super powerful hardware that costs absurd amounts of money. I made this with the goal of getting it to run on consumer hardware. Since it runs offline, performance depends entirely on your computer's power.

If you have a Windows computer with a GPU or a MacOS computer with an M4+ chip, it runs well. It will otherwise make calculations with your CPU's power, which will be slower but is absolutely still usable.

It's absolutely true that giant AI datacenters like those used for bigger models like ChatGPT, et al, are sucking up power and water from communities across the world. This isn't that- the only power used is what you use on your computer. So, it's not killing the planet any more than reading this website is.

Training models is also costly from a resource perspective. The open-source models that power Prepperbot have already been fully trained- no additional power is needed to make them serve up prepper information.

If you're asking the question in more of a Terminator sense, this model's only capabilities are text generation and local information retrieval. It's far too simple of a model to be of any sort of concern like that (even though its awesome capabilities deserve to be recognized).
